Constitutions of the Society of Jesus and their Complementary Norms, edited by John W. Padberg SJ
In 1995 the 34th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus mandated a revision of the Constitutions of the Society, which was published in an official Latin version in two sections. First came the original Ignatian text along with notes, appended to it by authority of the Congregation, indicating which parts of the Constitutions had been abrogated, modified or clarified over the course of time. The second section contained the ‘norms complementary to the Constitutions’, which express the spirit of the Constitutions and indicate how they are to be lived out in the contemporary renewal of Jesuit life and apostolates. The Congregation also decreed that these two elements of Jesuit law should be published together in the same volume. This English translation, unlike the Latin text, presents the ten parts of the Constitutions and the corresponding parts of the Complementary Norms on facing pages. It is an indispensible document in understanding the modern Society of Jesus.
