Joseph F. Conwell SJ, Walking in the Spirit: A Reflection on Jeronimo Nadal’s Phrase ‘Contemplative Likewise in Action’

This is a book for everyone interested in prayer. It recognizes the universal call to holiness expressed at Vatican II, but it does so from the perspective of Jerónimo Nadal, one of the closest colleagues of Ignatius of Loyola, and one of the the first Jesuits. It starts from Nadal’s famous phrase: ‘simul in actione contemplativus’ (‘contemplative likewise in action’). Nadal was convinced that contemplation leads to action, and that this action should nevertheless remain contemplative: men and women should be contemplative in prayer, and contemplative likewise in action. This book expresses an attitude which will be attractive to men and women who are interested in prayer and contemplation, and who wish to serve God in daily life.

Walking in the Spirit places its message in the context of Jerónimo Nadal’s life, with some history of his travels, and it also draws on Jesuit history, on the Constitutions of the Society, and on Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises. There are also ‘pauses for prayer’ at intervals in the text—opportunities to contemplate the Ignatian tradition and its relevance for peoples lives and work today.

‘Unearths the rich reserves of a Jesuit approach to prayer for the benefit of anyone of any tradition who is drawn by way of the paths of prayer into communion with the living God.’
Michael Downey, author of Understanding Christian Spirituality
