A Pilgrim's Testament: The Memoirs of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

During the years from 1551 until 1554, St Ignatius’s first companions urged him to set down on paper, as a sort of ‘founder’s testament and paternal instruction’ for the nascent Society of Jesus, an account of how God had guided him from the very beginnings of his religious conversion. Initially reluctant to do so, Saint Ignatius did eventually dictate an account of the profound spiritual experiences that changed a young Spanish grandee with ambitions for grandeur and worldly honors into a great saint. It is this account that the skillful pen of Fr Divarkar sets into lucid English in this volume.

The translator’s introductory remarks are followed by two prefaces, one by Jerome Nadal, SJ, and the other by the man to whom Ignatius dictated his account, Luis Gonçalves de Camara, SJ Saint Ignatius’s eleven chapters then complete the volume; the chapter names alone show what the scope of Ignatius’s story will be: Pamplona and Loyola, the Road to Montserrat, Sojourn at Manresa, Pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Return Across Europe, Barcelona and Alcalá, Trouble at Salamanca, Progress in Paris, Farewell to Spain, Venice and Vicenza, Finally at Rome.
