Antonio Ruiz de Montoya SJ, The Spiritual Conquest

The full title of this book is: The Spiritual Conquest Accomplished by the Religious of the Society of Jesus in the Provinces of Paraguay, Paraná, Uruguay, and Tape, Written by Father Antonio Ruiz de Montoya, of the Same Society (1639). Fr Ruiz de Montoya was one of the founders of the famous Jesuit Paraguay reductions of the seventeenth century; and this book is his personal account of the founding, flourishing, and eventual destruction of those Reductions.

In his Introduction, Fr McNaspy gives a summary account of Montoya’s life and work, and an evaluation of the book itself. Then follows Montoya’s own text: some 81 short chapters (some so brief that they do not take up even one full page). The text is a remarkable blend of acute, first-hand observation (which is of incalculable anthropological value) and some astonishingly credulous piety (chapters 21-26, for example, deal with the evidence for the apostle St Thomas’s having evangelized Paraguay at the dawn of the Christian era).

A fundamental and frequently cited document of South American history and ethnography, this book is at the same time a moving personal record. As few other works, it testifies to the intense religiosity, strong practical intelligence, and intrepid spirit of enterprise that marked the great missionaries of the Society of Jesus during its most heroic era.
