This is a magisterial translation of Saint Ignatius’s classic work, expressing ideas and nuances with great care but at the same time adapting the sixteenth-century text to the thought and speech patterns of twenty-first century-English.

In addition to the translation, however, the reader will find intensely valuable Fr Ganss’s ‘Endnotes on the Exercises’ section and the two Appendices, all of which run for almost eighty pages (pp. 143ff.) and which give the author’s ongoing commentary on the Exercises; the distilled thought of a true expert on the Exercises is here presented. The ‘Endnotes’ are keyed to particular sections of the Exercises; the two appendices (‘Scripture Texts: God’s Plan and the History of Salvation’ and ‘Toward a Deeper Study of the Foundation’) are more in the nature of free standing essays.

No one who is serious about St Ignatius’s Exercises should be without this book.
