John L. McCarthy SJ, Documents of the 34th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus
The thirty fourth general congregation of the Jesuit order was held in Rome in 1995. This book gives first of all a lengthy historical preface, explaining how the congregation came to be called, what preparations were made for it, etc. The twenty six decrees follow, dealing with (i) Introduction (‘United with Christ on Mission’); (ii) Our Mission (dealing with Jesuits as servants of Christ’s mission, and the relationship of that mission to justice, culture, and interreligious dialogue); (iii) Aspects of Jesuit Life for Mission (on the ministerial priesthood and Jesuit identity, the Jesuit brothers, chastity, poverty, the promotion of vocations); (iv) In the Church (having a proper attitude of service in the Church, ecumenism, coöperation with the laity, the situation of women in Church and civil society).
Next follow decrees on (v) dimensions and particular sectors of the Jesuit mission (communications, the intellectual dimension of Jesuit ministries, Jesuits and university life, Secondary, Primary, and non formal education, parish ministry, and ecology); (vi) structures of government (interprovincial and supraprovincial coöperation, interprovince houses, the Roman houses, congregations and governance, ongoing formation of superiors, powers granted to the general.)
A concluding decree on characteristics of the Jesuit way of proceeding is followed by appendices dealing with various addresses given to the Congregation. A list of delegates, as well as an index of names and one of topics, is given.
