Michael Ivens SJ, An Approach to Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Michael Ivens was one of the leading figures in the renewal of Ignatian spirituality that blossomed in the last decades of the twentieth century. He was a close collaborator of James Walsh, founder of the journal The Way, and became a leading authority on the Ignatian Exercises with his commentary, Understanding the Spiritual Exercises (1998). When Michael came to the end of his life in 2005, the only papers that he expressly asked to have printed were subsequently published as Keeping in Touch (2007). However, quite by chance, a small cache of early writings then came to light, the largest section consisting of trial sketches for a ‘Life’ of St Ignatius that was never completed. To these were added further papers devoted to Ignatian themes: the Spiritual Exercises, the Society of Jesus, and characteristic features of Ignatian spirituality. Taken together they round off our picture of Michael’s work, and at the same time open up resh perspectives on the great saint who won over Michael’s heart.
