John R. Donahue SJ, What Does the Lord Require? A Bibliographical Essay on the Bible and Social Justice

Papal teaching, statements by groups of local bishops, and a large body of theological reflection, while conditioned by time and circumstances, have yielded a rich trove of concerns and principles conducive to a just and human society. These include, among many others, the essential link between the social and the religious dimensions of human life, the dignity of the human person, the promotion of the common good, a deep concern for the poor and the marginalized. Increasingly these writings have come to rely more explicitly on biblical themes and motifs for their basis. In his brief but painstaking bibliography, Fr Donahue surveys and summaries some of the major issues and studies by biblical scholars in finding resources in the Bible for the task of fostering social justice in the world today.
