Pedro Arrupe SJ, In Him Alone Is Our Hope

The documents in this slender volume, the fourth of five in this series, deal with the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the unique gift of the Father to the world, as it appears in some of the writings of the late superior general of the Society of Jesus, Father Pedro Arrupe. The book has three main sections instructions to Jesuits, today’s theology on the Heart of Christ, and pastoral orientations.

Fittingly, the opening document is the 31st general congregation’s decree on the Sacred Heart (1966); this is followed by Fr Arrupe’s homily at Valladolid on what the heart of Christ means to the Society of Jesus (1970). Next is a letter to the entire Society on the difficulties and possible solutions involved in facing a new situation (one wherein devotion to the Sacred Heart has come to be seen by some as passé) (1972). The 1979 prayer to Jesus Christ our model, the conclusion of the discourse on ‘Our Way of Proceeding’ is given, as is ‘The Heart of Christ Centre of the Christian Mystery and Key to the Universe’, a chapter of an Australian book (1981). A homily at the Gesù in Rome speaks of a devotion for our times (1965), and another Roman homily on the mystery of the merciful love (1979) are given; all in all, some 17 places are provided in which the reader can begin to appreciate the depth of the meaning that the devotion to the Sacred Heart had for Fr Arrupe.
