Jeffrey Klaiber, The Jesuits in Latin America, 1549-2000

In the colonial period Jesuits stood out as teachers, preachers, missionaries and spiritual directors. In their schools they carried on the traditions of Jesuit education for generations of students. They defended the Native Americans and founded an impressive network of missions. They put an emphasis on preaching the Gospel in the cultural categories of the people they were evangelizing. They helped to forge a new Latin American identity and in Peru they encouraged Inca nationalism, thereby preparing the road toward independence. When they were exiled to Europe at the time of the so-called suppression of the Society of Jesus, they became prophets who foretold the creation of a new American homeland. In the nineteenth century Jesuits often were defenders of a conservative Catholicism, but in the twentieth they became defenders of a new just social order based on the Gospel. Since the Second Vatican Council they have been found in the forefront of a theology of liberation and of the defense of human rights. Some of them have paid with their lives for the defense of justice and peace. Today as in the past Jesuits are found in every field as educators, pastors, communicators, defenders, of native culture, thinkers and social critics, carrying out in modern ways the same mission that they began in the sixteenth century. 480 pages.
