John Moffatt SJ, The Resurrection of the Word: A Modern Quest for Intelligent Faith

‘Let us suppose you like going to church. You have a good pastor, you find consolation in your prayers and you value the way of life that Christianity represents. Yet, at the same time, you find yourself uncomfortably aware of a sneaking tension between the words you recite in the creed on a Sunday and the language in which you think for the other 167 hours of the week. What is actually going on in this liturgy with these friends and fellow believers? How gospel true is gospel truth—let alone the rest of Scripture? You encounter words, language, ways of talking and thinking that often seem to fit uncomfortably with a world of computers, shopping centres, critical thinking and the struggle to pay the gas bill.’

How can we integrate a reasonable, modern world-view with the richness of transcendent faith? This question has challenged religious believers in every generation. In The Resurrection of the Word John Moffatt SJ sets out to give twenty-first-century Christians, particularly those in the Roman Catholic tradition, a framework for finding their answer. The book explores issues from the development of doctrine to religion and science, from interpreting the Bible to understanding Christian and non-Christian ethics. It offers a basis for a positive and intelligent relationship between western Christianity and the contemporary world.

‘Fr Moffatt not only stands in wonder before the mysteries of faith but seeks also to understand them through penetrating questions and refreshing insights. His work is soundly grounded in our old tradition while explaining it in a new language. His questions represent the concerns and desires of our own times; his method in responding leads the reader into a spiritual quest that never ends.’
