Mary Ward was a pioneer of active, unenclosed religious life for women, and was the founder of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her life was marked by suffering, persecution and setbacks originating from both within and without her own Church. Religious life without formal monastic enclose was seen as revolutionary in the seventeenth century, especially for women, and the members of the Institute were known to their directors as 'galloping girls'.
