Remembering Iñigo: Glimpses of the Life of St Ignatius of Loyola: The Memoriale of Luis Gonçalves da Câmara, translated by Alexander Eaglestone and Joseph A. Munitiz SJ

Luis Gonçalves da Câmara was chosen by St Ignatius Loyola to record his religious experiences and development, in a document that came to be known as Ignatius’ Autobiography. But Da Câmara also felt that it was important for his fellow Jesuits to have a more personal and human record of their founder. During a period of seven months in 1555 Da Câmara observed Ignatius, and wrote about how he behaved towards people in consolation and those in desolation, those who were tempted, and those who needed encouragement or reprimand. He recorded how Ignatius prayed and celebrated Mass, how he asked an answered questions, his conversation, his food and his dress. The resulting work is an extraordinary and frank portrait of St Ignatius, in his sanctity and in his human fallibility, which for many years the Roman authorities were reluctant to see in print. This new translation by Alexander Eagleston and Joseph A. Munitiz SJ respects the immediacy and character of Da Câmara’s original.
