Hearts on Fire: Praying with Jesuits, edited by Michael Harter SJ

‘Were not our hearts on fire?’ the two disciples of Jesus asked each other as they hurried back to Jerusalem after their trip to the village of Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). What they told their companions about their experience, and what they heard about others’ encounters with the risen Jesus, deepened their faith and enabled them to carry on with renewed energy and hope. What those disciples experienced can happen to any Christian who searches for a closer relationship with God. From the time of St Ignatius onwards, Jesuits have found their hearts set on fire by prayer, and they have shared their insights and questions with their companions and friends. They have taught and preached and directed retreats; they have distilled their struggles, questions, and wisdom into journals and books.

This book contains 117 prayers, written by some 40 Jesuits from the foundation of the Society to the twenty-first century. Some are direct paraphrases of material in the Spiritual Exercises; others are practical applications stemming from retreat meditations. A general grouping organises the prayers according to the four Weeks of the Exercises, but they remain eclectic and diverse: the prayer of a Jesuit steeped in the piety of the seventeenth century may well be placed next to that of a social reformer of the twentieth or or twenty-first; the reflections of a theologian or an ecclesiastical statesman may follow the thoughts of an ordinary parish prieSt
