On Giving the Spiritual Exercises: The early Jesuit Manuscript Directories and the Official Directory of 1599, translated by Martin E. Palmer SJ,

In recent years there have been widespread efforts to restore the Spiritual Exercises as originally conceived and given by Saint Ignatius and by the earliest Jesuits. The Spiritual Exercises were intended, not for groups, but for individuals on directed retreats in which the director would confer with each of them every day, discussing their experiences and giving them matter for the next day’s prayer.

An extensive body of material on spiritual direction, intended to supplement the often brief and cryptic text of the Spiritual Exercises itself, has survived from the time of St Ignatius. This includes Ignatius’ own supplementary remarks, and substantial handbooks or ‘directories’ from his associates, such as his secretary, Juan de Polanco, and other prominent sixteenth-century Jesuits.

On Giving the Spiritual Exercises provides translations of this material, along with the official Jesuit Directory to the Spiritual Exercises which was distilled from it and published in 1599. It is an invaluable asset to anyone serious about directing the Spiritual Exercises.
