This is a Special Order book which has to be individually ordered from the Institute of Jesuit Sources in St Louis, USA. It may take up to a month to arrive. If you are shopping from the US it may be quicker and cheaper to order directly from the IJS (http://www.jesuitsources.com/)

John W. Padberg SJ, For Matters of Greater Moment, translated by Martin D. O’Keefe SJ, edited by John L. McCarthy SJ

A Jesuit general congregation is the highest legislative body within that religious order, and meets, as the Jesuit Constitutions state, ‘for matters of greater moment.’ There have been 34 such congregations to date, held at no specified time but ordinarily occurring approximately ever nine years. Prior to the publication of this book in 1994, the ‘decrees’ (officially binding statements or directives) of the first thirty congregations existed only in Latin (the decrees of congregations 31 through 34 had been translated shortly after the conclusion of those congregations themselves). For Matters of Greater Moment, then, is a scholarly aid of considerable significance for those who are interested in the Jesuits but who do not readily read Latin.

The book begins with a lengthy (64-page) history of the thirty congregations, affording the reader a glimpse into the circumstances surrounding each congregation and a summary of what actions the congregation took.

Then follow the decrees of each of the congregations, with each decree preceded by a brief summary of the decree’s contents. After this, an appendix lists each Jesuit who participated in one or more congregations, then a list of the participants in each of the first thirty congregations; two indices (one of persons and one of topics) complete the work.
