A Jesuit general congregation is the highest legislative body within that religious order, and meets, as the Jesuit Constitutions state, ‘for matters of greater moment.’ There have been 34 such congregations to date, held at no specified time but ordinarily occurring approximately ever nine years. Prior to the publication of this book in 1994, the ‘decrees’ (officially binding statements or directives) of the first thirty congregations existed only in Latin (the decrees of congregations 31 through 34 had been translated shortly after the conclusion of those congregations themselves).
