David M. Stanley SJ, A Modern Scriptural Approach to the Spiritual Exercises

Father David Stanley SJ, was an internationally recognized scholar and professor of New Testament Studies at Regis College, Toronto (itself a federated college of the University of Toronto), and a master of retreat giving, lecturing, and writing. The present book is largely the result of an eight day retreat that he gave to Jesuit seminarians shortly before their ordination to the priesthood. In this retreat, he brought his breadth and depth of scriptural knowledge to bear on the practical business of conducting an actual retreat. As such, the book is something of a lived experience and, while touching upon the usual items that an Ignatian retreat might cover (the Incarnation, the Nativity, the temptations of Jesus, etc.), in addition deals with such eminently practical matters as the biblical view of sin, deeper knowledge of God through repented sin, Jesus’s baptism as part of the eschatological dimension of history, Jesus as the Way to the Father, and so on.

This book is a classic, and, although written in 1967, retains a perennial value that makes it desirable even in the opening years of the twenty first century. Retreat directors as a whole are well advised to have this book in their libraries.
