Fr Laurence Gooley has written a remarkable book, one that looks in two directions at once. For every follower of Christ, there is a great deal in this slender volume to ponder and learn regarding prayer, community, commitment, service, and other themes basic to Catholic Christianity.

This broad perspective is, however, placed in a particular context, that of the Christian Life Communities. The book is a handbook for CLC that expertly guides its user from the very first CLC meeting that he or she attends to quite far along in the development of that user’s spirituality as a member of that community. If such were all that the book is, its appeal would be limited to CLC members. That is not the case. A reader can readily extrapolate much of Fr Gooley’s material to fit the more widespread group of Christians who simply want to know, love, and serve the Lord. Examples of such material what he has written on experiencing prayer (items like the consciousness examen, praying with Scripture, Ignatian contemplation, images of God, among others); his remarks on following Jesus (Mary, Mother and Disciple, Peter the Disciple, preferential option for the poor are some of his topics here); and his thoughts on the unconditioned love of God (with such topics as God’s unconditional love, spiritual freedom, being loved just as we are, etc.).

Through this book, Fr Gooley serves his fellow CLC members very well; but he serves the wider Church equally fruitfully.
